Rafael Benitez was appointed as the interim manager of Chelsea following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and his time at the club ends at the end of the season. Understandably, the club are looking at alternatives to take the hot seat and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is the latest man to be added to the Stamford Bridge shortlist, the Daily Mirror reports.
Chelsea appointed Di Matteo in March this year after parting ways with Andre Villas-Boas on a temporary basis and he went on to guide the club to a first Champions League victory and added the FA Cup to his list of achievements. However, Chelsea sacked the popular Italian following a string of bad results, including the loss to Juventus that pushed them to the brink of a Champions League exit.
Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has been appointed till the end of the season but is only an interim boss, with the press linking former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, former Chelsea and current Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho and Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp with the Chelsea job.
Guardiola is the club’s top priority but reports suggest Chelsea could miss out on their man, who has expressed his admiration for Manchester United and Arsenal and is also wanted by Bayern Munich and Paris St. Germain. With that in mind, Simeone presents an interesting alternative despite his lack of success at the highest level.
