For regular followers of the shenanigans of the transfer window, the name Alessandro Matri will be a familiar one. The 28-year old Juventus striker has become a bit of an outcast at the club, and was linked with moves to AC Milan, Napoli and even Liverpool this summer, though none of those transfers involved any of the aforementioned clubs trying to buy him! Sadly for Matri, everytime his name popped up in the press it was with Juventus attempting to use him as a makeweight in an attempt to buy someone they were more interested in.
There is some good news though for Matri fans with rumours emanating out of Italy suggesting that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen on the experienced striker and might be willing to make an offer for him in a cut-price deal come January. The fact that Olivier Giroud has finally found his feet at Arsenal, and won over the fans with his fantastic work rate means that the Gunners are not necessarily looking for someone who will be first choice, but are instead targeting someone who will be prepared to be a squad player, and could give them cover when Chamakh and Gervinho leave for the African Cup of Nations in January.
And Matri perfectly fits the bill.
