Bayern Munich have joined Barcelona in the race to sign Brazilian David Luiz from Chelsea with reports claiming that the German giants will offer striker Mario Mandzukic as a makeweight.
David Luiz has struggled for game time under Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, failing to convince the Blues boss of his worth at either centre back or as a holding midfielder.
Barcelona have already made their interest known in Luiz, but could be beaten to the signing by ex-manager Pep Guardiola, mindful of Chelsea’s keenness to boost their attacking options.
In fact it is Jose Mourinho’s unhappiness with Chelsea’s strike force that has pushed Bayern Munich to the front of the queue for Luiz, especially as they are willing to trade Croatia international Mandzukic.
Speculation about Mandzukic’s arrival at the Bridge however puts the futures of out-of-contract Samuel Eto’o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres in serious doubt.
With Chelsea already believed to have sealed the deal for Athletic Madrid hit man Diego Costa, the signing of Mandzukic could be signaled as a statement of intent from Mourinho to challenge for the title.
