Spanish newspaper Marca has provided its English counterparts fodder for reams of rumours in January with former Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric having been rated as the worst signing of the season by the daily’s readers.
The Real Madrid super flop has been instantly linked with a return to the Premier League by the Daily Mail with the prolific rumour machine suggesting that Manchester City, Man United and Chelsea are all lining up a move for the 27-year old Croatian. Real Madrid spent £33 million on Modric after a rather protracted courtship period during which Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy sapped every penny he could from the Galacticos. However, with just one goal and one assist to show from the first half of the season, it comes as no surprise that Modric is being linked with a rather speedy return to England.
While the big money men will no doubt be eyeing Modric, it is possible that his contract might just include a clause giving Tottenham first choice of refusal on the player’s sale. Spurs fans are already on a high after their encouraging start to the season, and throw in Modric to the mix, and they could well be signing title winning songs yet again.
