Chelsea duo facing exit door next summer insists new boss
Chelsea new manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that senior duo Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole could be leaving the club after the end of the season.
Both the players will be out of contract next summer and according to the Spaniard it is highly unlikely that they would be staying at Stamford Bridge beyond that.
The 34-year-old is the third highest goal scorer for the Blues but with the burgeoning progress of youngster Oscar, the veteran has dropped down the pecking orders at the club.
Ashley Cole’s situation is bit complicated here. The 31-year-old has maintained his fine form for both club and country but the London based club is more keen to give youngster Ryan Bertrand the necessary platform to progress.
Rafa said as quoted in The Daily Mail: “I think so, that is the case at the moment.
“I am only here for seven months. If it is for two or three years then maybe I would have an influence.
“Sometimes you are in a difficult position as manager because there’s too much to decide on, so it’s better to have a technical director sometimes.”
The duo have won 14 titles between them in their glittering career at Chelsea, but according to the new rule at the club, players over the age of 30, won’t be given a contract extension of more than one year. Both the legends are crude victims of Roman’s new rule and Benitez has no influence to prevent that.
