There is plenty of joy this morning for Chelsea fans, with Jose Mourinho’s announcement of his desire to return to “a special club” followed by a story breaking in The Independent that Chelsea are now prepared to offer Frank Lampard a contract extension as Jose wants his star midfielder to stay on at the club.
The story reports that Lampard will need to wait till the end of the season for his new deal, and that it will only be placed on the table once Mourinho is confirmed as the club’s new manager. Owner Roman Abramovich is apparently not too thrilled about the idea of an extended stay for the England international, but is willing to cede to it to keep Mourinho happy, however, should the Portuguese tactician make a u-turn, a new deal for Lampard may be off the table.
Rumours though do suggest that Jose will indeed return to Stamford Bridge, and will announce the Lampard contract extension at his first press conference.
Frank meanwhile will be hoping to make the most of the games he still has left in a Chelsea shirt this season to overtake Bobby Tambling as the club’s record goalscorer.
