Chelsea have begun the business of planning replacements for some of their departing stars with Southampton teenager Luke Shaw being lined up as a long term replacement for left back Ashley Cole.
New manager Rafa Benitez confirmed Chelsea fans’ worst fears that Cole would be leaving the club this summer after owner Roman Abramovich rejected the England international’s demand for a multi year contract. French side Paris Saint Germain are believed to be the favourites to sign Cole, and will be able to discuss terms with him in January when he enters the last six months of his existing contract.
While Ashley Cole’s understudy Ryan Bertrand is expected to fill in the role once the former Arsenal man leaves the club, Luke Shaw will in turn become Bertrand’s understudy and provide cover at left back when required. Despite his lack of experience, Bertrand has already shown he has a good head on his shoulders and even played in the UEFA Champions League Final last season where Chelsea shocked Bayern Munich.
Shaw meanwhile comes from the Southampton training academy which has produced superstars like Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in recent years, and could be the latest Saint making his way over to London.
