Chelsea are in deep problems at the moment, both on and off the pitch. On the pitch, the club is still fighting for two cups and a top four finish but there is a danger they could be dumped out of all the competitions while top four finishes could be out of their reach too.
Off the pitch, fans are vocal about the displeasure with “interim” manager Rafael Benitez while club legend Frank Lampard’s contract situation still hangs in the balance and in all probability the club won’t offer him any new deals.
Chelsea players feel the problems are rooted mentally. Branislav Ivanovic, the Blues defender feels they need to put up a strong fighting spirit which they displayed last season that resulted in FA Cup and Champions League triumph.
“We have to be honest with each other and admit that a lot of things are not going how we would like them to,” Ivanovic said as quoted in the ESPN.
“We are not playing at the level we know we are capable of and that is becoming normal for us. So we have to change things very quickly.
“Time is running out for us if we want to finish the season at the highest level. And if we want to change things we are going to have to show more character. We need to play as a team and show some fighting spirit.”
Ivanovic feels it is not only the fighting spirit or the lack of it that is hampering the team’s progress but several other factors like the whacking gap of 19 points with leaders Manchester United should also be considered as a serious issue.
Accordingly it has become a question of attitude now and Chelsea will have to take each and every game as a cup final.
