Chelsea are all set to fill one of those two rather vacant positions in their squad by signing Marseille right back Cesar Azpilicueta according to reports in the British press this morning.
Chelsea, who have reportedly had an initial 5 million pound offer turned down for the 22-year old Spaniard, are set to go back to the French club with an improved bid for 8 million pounds early next week.
With a squad in the first eleven well and truly available, and no genuine competition for places it is unlikely that the young Spaniard is going to think twice about signing for the European Champions.
Chelsea had surprisingly let Portuguese defender Jose Bosingwa leave for free this summer and with Paulo Ferreira the only option in the squad at present (and a hardly used one at that), it comes as no surprise that Chelsea are finally making a move for Azpilicueta. Though Branislav Ivanovic has filled in at right back quite a lot during his Chelsea career, the powerful defender has made public his desire to be used in a central role, and Chelsea will be keen to wrap up the Azpilicueta signing before they take on Manchester City in the Community Shield in a couple of week’s time.
