In a game of such magnitude last night in the Capital One Cup, boss Roberto di Matteo sent out a bunch of players who were clearly lacking match sharpness.
Young Lucas Piazon looked completely off the pace and failed to get into the game at all. His lack of first team action and nerves got to the young man and he looked out of place.
Defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu also looked off the pace and he couldn’t deal with the united midfield when they attacked. He looked like a player who was lacking confidence, and was too slow for a fast paced game.
The only striker on the night was Daniel Sturridge and even though he scored, he was barely involved in the game and when he did manage to get a touch, he did nothing with it. The lad just looks out-of-sorts and needs some regular first team action.
Victor Moses came in and looked impressive in the first half but went missing during the second. When he was on the ball, he caused the left-back all sorts of problems with his pace and power. But overall I liked the look of young Moses and i feel he deserves more time in the first team.
Ryan Bertrand and Cesare Azpilicueta had decent games at wing-backs but were at times just a little out of position; they also spent too much time attacking, rather than defending
It is obvious that all these players either need game time with Chelsea, or be sent out on loan to continue their development, because if they continue to sit on the bench? Then they are no good to anybody.
