Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists that time and patience will get the club back into Europe’s elite competition. The former Swansea boss has seen his team draw seven times this season as the Merseysiders sit in tenth position in the premier league table. Questions have been raised over the poor performances of several Liverpool players and there could be an overhaul at the club in January. Below is a list of four players that Liverpool should replace if they are to push for a top four position.
Joe Cole: The former Chelsea player was touted as country’s one of the brightest stars after scintillating performances at West Ham in his younger days, but his stay at Liverpool has been far from impressive. A red card on his debut against Arsenal followed by injuries caused the winger to drop down the pecking order and was loaned to Lille for a season. Even after his return to Liverpool, Cole has been in poor form, showing little impetus to regain his old form. His contribution has been close to nothing and Rodgers should sell him to free up some funds in January.
Stewart Downing: Downing has been one of the worst signings for Liverpool since the days of Gerard Houllier and his performances in the last 1.5 years have shown exactly why he should be axed from the team. Poor deliveries, inconsistent performances week in week out and a lack of goals should provide enough reasons for sanctioning a passage move for him.
Jordan Henderson: Another overrated English player purchased for much more than what they are worth. Young Henderson has failed to live up to his price tag and the potential he showed at his former club Sunderland. As a captain of the England U21’s, fans and critics expected more from the Englishman but his failure to cement a place in Liverpool’s midfield could lead to an exit this January.
Jose ‘Pepe’ Reina: The Liverpool goal keeper has not been the heroic figure Liverpool fans have known him to be, especially during this season. Known for his excellent penalty stopping and split-second saving abilities, the Spaniard’s performances have been the opposite of his antics during his peak years at the club. Reina has developed a knack for passing the ball to the feet of opposing attackers twenty yards out and his otherwise pinpoint long range kicks have been askew. It is no wonder that strong rumors are going around suggesting that Arsenal are monitoring the keeper’s situation at Anfield and Brendan Rodgers would be wise if he were to offload Reina in January.
