Chelsea may win their first title of the season under new manager Rafael Benitez – the Club World Cup Championship.
“The biggest disappointment for me is that in two weeks time they are going to the world championship [Fifa World Club Cup]. You would have thought they would have waited to give the guy a chance to win it,” said Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Scot added “Rafa Benítez is very lucky because on his CV in two weeks’ time he could have two world championships to his name – and has had nothing to do with the teams.”
Well, that is indeed a harsh truth, but one can see it as an act of putting pressure on an opposition manager. Let us turn our attention from the manager, and instead talk about the team as whole. Seriously, if they really win it, won’t it be a farce?
This competition is played among the best clubs from every continent and was supposed to bring out the best from the bests. This is a prestigious event and the only platform where it gives a chance to play with top clubs of other continents.
Chelsea are a team that didn’t finish in top four last season in England. Though they won the elusive Champions League for the first time in their history but have failed miserably to hold on to that. They have become a joke of Europe, by getting eliminated in the group stages only.
They are not doing anything extraordinary as well in the league this time. The likes of Inter Milan, Barcelona who won the competition before were the best teams in Europe and their domestic league as well. Same can’t be said about Chelsea. Thereby somewhere it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
