Lack of Chelsea squad depth starting to have an impact
Chelsea’s shock defeat at the hands of Southampton on Saturday has turned the heat right back on Rafa Benitez, and the Interim Manager was forced to defend his team selection in his post match press conference.
The Blues take on Manchester United in a crucial FA Cup Quarter-final Replay on Monday, and it was pretty evident from the team Benitez put out on Saturday that his primary objective is to win the FA Cup. While Chelsea would be very keen to not end the season without any silverware, commonsense suggests that booking a place in the Champions League for next season should be afforded the highest priority.
It remains another matter that a team featuring the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres could not get the better of Southampton, but the fact that Benitez made 7 changes to his starting eleven for this game did not miss anyone’s attention.
Benitez defended his decisions after the game, stating, “We had to manage the squad. We didn’t have many options in some positions so we had the players we had to use. You have to approach every game like it is the most important and we thought with these players we would be fine.”
