Bundesliga outfit FC Schalke were open to offers for their defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos till the very end of the summer transfer window, according to reports in Kicker.
The Greek prodigy had reportedly elicited the interest of a number of top European sides this summer with the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea vying for his services, at one point of time. The Blues were also speculated to have inquired about his price, following which he was quoted at £19m by the Germans.
Meanwhile, Liverpool were touted to be the frontrunners for his signature till recently. With the club suffering from recent defensive woes, it was expected that manager Brendan Rodgers would try landing the 21 year old at Anfield. However, the Reds’ decided to go another way and bought Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori and PSG’s Mamadou Sakho instead.
Schalke’s willingness to offload Papadopoulos means that the club might be ready to entertain offers during the January transfer window too, by when the youngster should have also recovered fully from the injury that kept him out of action most of last season.
