Liverpool and Tottenham will go head to head with each other to seal a summer move for West Brom striker Shane Long. The Republic of Ireland star is also being chased by Lazio and Sevilla, who failed to complete a winter switch giving the Premier League sides a chance to stay in the hunt for the player this summer, reported the Mirror.
The 26 year-old started his career with Irish club Cork City before Reading brought him to England in 2005. The striker joined West Brom in 2011 and he has since become an integral part of their first team. Long has been in impressive form this season, scoring 9 goals in 25 games for the Baggies.
Long has less than 18 months on his current deal and West Brom want to tie the player down to a long term deal at the Hawthorns. Liverpool were hoping to land the player this summer with top striker Luis Suarez being the primary target for Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Tottenham have begun searching the market for new strikers as Emmanuel Adebayor has failed to live up to expectations in his second season at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham are firmly in place for a top four finish this season and the North Londoners could use the lure of Champions League football to clinch the striker’s signature. Rodgers is also eyeing a top four finish this season and should the manager succeed in bringing Liverpool back into the Champions League, he could have a shot at bringing Long to Anfield. With more than four months of league football to go, Long will have enough time to impress his suitors and at the same time decide his preference for the summer.
