Barcelona have made Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger their top summer target as they look for a long-term successor to captain Carles Puyol in defence. However, Brendan Rodgers is prepared to put up a fight to keep hold of the Denmark international this summer.
Agger is a youth product of Danish club Brondby and made the move to Anfield in 2006. The 28 year-old is an integral part of Liverpool’s back line, having made 40 appearances for the Reds this season. Barcelona were keen on a transfer even last summer but Liverpool resisted the approaches of the Spanish giants and even signed the defender to a new four year-deal in October. However, the Mirror reports that the Catalan side are keen on improving their back four and they will make firm attempts to sign the Danish star this summer.
The Liverpool defence is already set to lose Jamie Carragher who will be retiring this summer, while the unsettled Martin Skrtel is being chased by Zenit St. Petersburg. Sebastien Coates has also been linked with a move back to South America after a failed stint in England and Rodgers would not want to lose yet another first team defender this summer.
The Reds manager is already plotting moves for Swansea skipper Ashley Williams and Feyenoord man Stefan de Vrij, but Agger remains an important part of his defensive unit and unless Barcelona offer ridiculous sums of money, Rodgers will fend off all attempts to lure the centre-back away from Liverpool.
