Liverpool are set to make an £8 million bid for exciting German teenager Max Meyer according to reports in the German press.
Meyer has had an impressive break out season with Schalke, scoring 7 goals in 41 appearances and even making the provisional squad for the German national team for this summer’s World Cup.
His team mate Julian Draxler has stolen most of the world’s attention, however it appears that Meyer could be a cheaper alternative for Liverpool, from a club that seems to have learned the trick to producing talented attacking midfield players, having also developed Lewis Holtby who moved to the Premier League to play with Tottenham.
Meyer was the subject of serious interest from Chelsea in January, having impressed when playing against them in the group stage. Chelsea were apparently ready to play 15 million Euros for the talented teen, however he decided against the move due to the high number of attacking midfielders already in the Blues squad.
As that 15 million Euro figure dwarfs Liverpools £8 million offer it remains to be seen if it will be enough to convince Schalke to sell. Meyer himself may be more interested in making the move as Liverpool do not have the same level of depth in the attacking midfield roles as Chelsea do, with Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho heavily relied upon last season.
It is not known whether any move for Meyer would put an end to the protracted transfer of Adam Lallana from Southampton.
