Liverpool are in the driving seat to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for around £8 million in the next week. According to reports in the Daily Mail, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has upped the ante to sign the Belgian shot-stopper as the rumors linking current No.1 Pepe Reina away from Anfield seem to intensify with each passing day.
Pepe Reina has been linked with a switch to Catalan giants Barcelona where the enigmatic Victor Valdes is refusing to commit himself to a new contract. Valdes has just a year left on his current deal at Barcelona and is tipped to join the revolution at Monaco
Mignolet on his part has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league during the past season and was the shining light in an otherwise dismal campaign for Sunderland. The Belgian is facing increasing pressure for his place between the sticks in the national set-up as Chelsea youngster Thibaut Courtois has shown tremendous maturity for his tender age.
The Belgian is eager to swap the North-East for Merseyside as it will greatly boost his chances of starting for his national team following the increased exposure he would receive at Liverpool.
Both the clubs are on the verge of striking a compromise for the Belgian International with Sunderland hopeful that they can get as close to the £10 million mark as possible.
