Manchester United and Juventus look set to do battle this summer as they compete for the signature of Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic, a Chelsea reject who is currently plying his trade at Benfica.
Matic’s agent talked up the interest in his client during an interview with Portuguese paper A Bola, stating, “With how Matic is doing it is normal that clubs are interested in him. It is amazing how his game has developed and how he plays in every game; so many clubs want to watch a player like him. At Chelsea he never had any good opportunities and he is now feeling well at a big club like Benfica.”
Interestingly, United are believed to be plotting a triple swoop on Benfica, and are keen on not just signing Matic, but his midfield partner Nicolas Gaitan and central defender Ezequiel Garay as well.
Matic is currently the creative fulcrum at Benfica, and the club would be reluctant in letting the youngster leave, but like most players who ply their trade in Portugal, the right offer can certainly speed up negotiations.
