With Jack Butland set to make a permanent move to Stoke City at the end of this season, Asmir Begovic was understood to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s top choice to replace David de Gea. However, reports in the Spanish media now claim that the Red Devils could be interested in signing experienced Barcelona stopper Victor Valdes.
31 year-old Valdes will be out of contract at Barca in the summer of 2014 and the keeper turned down a contract extension with the Catalans, expressing a desire to experience new cultures in the final laps of his career. Arsenal have been linked heavily with a summer move for Valdes, as Wojciech Szczesny continues to disappoint this season but Ferguson is now considering making a bid for the Spaniard.
Some pundits though believe that De Gea could re-emerge as the best option for Ferguson if he continues to perform at the same level as he did against Real Madrid last week. However, the 22 year-old is erratic and Ferguson could bring in the £10 million-rated stopper to take over as first-choice at Old Trafford.
Should United’s interest be real, Valdes would also prefer a move to Old Trafford rather than the Emirates as the Gunners struggle to reach the top four this season. Lack of Champions League football next season will seriously affect Arsenal’s summer transfer plans and Ferguson could use that to his advantage to seal the deal for Valdes.
