Manchester United are already hot on the trail of Everton left back Leighton Baines, but it is expected that manager David Moyes would now double up his efforts to land him at Old Trafford. According to reports in The Daily Mirror, Everton boss Roberto Martinez has chucked the idea of a new deal being offered to Baines for the time being, which might lead to him contemplating a move to United.
The Englishman was set to earn £75,000-a-week in wages, a 50% rise on his current salary, for having stayed on at the Merseyside club. But Martinez has decided against offering a new deal to Baines before January, whilst still insisting though that the player would be rewarded for his loyalty to the club.
The Everton boss was quoted telling reporters: “At the moment, all it is the games and any individual contracts or situations are put aside. The only thing that concerns me is just to make sure he’s as fit as he can be and gets in a stronger position and balances the demands of England and club level. That’s what I’m focused on, that his day to day is perfect. Everything else, behind the scenes we’re happy with the situation and we’re making sure he’s happy as well.”
Martinez’s words would not go down well with Baines, who might have grown hopeful of an increase in his salary. The Englishman certainly knows that he might earn a lot more at Old Trafford and United would be keen to capitalise on the opportunity by making another move for him in January. Moreover, the 28 year old knows that with him being in the prime of his career, this might be the last opportunity for him to move to a big club.
