Every year the transfer market shows us how fickle the mind of the current crop of players is. While most of the times its about players committing to clubs and then performing a u-turn, this time Christian Benteke has done it the other way round by withdrawing his transfer request and committing his future to Aston Villa.
The player was quoted by Villa’s website as stating, “I am very happy to be back here in Birmingham and at Aston Villa, and to sign a new contract. This is a great Club and it has given me a lot. Now I have to give back to my teammates and the fans who have always been right behind me.”
This is nothing short of a brilliant piece of news for Aston Villa. Given the quality of Benteke’s performances last term, Villa would most surely have been one of the clubs in the relegation dogfight had he left. However, now the club can look to strengthen in other areas and aim for a top half finish.
This development will also come as a massive blow to Tottenham and Chelsea, who were believed to be the clubs most interested in the player’s services. Both clubs are fast running out of transfer targets as they look to bolster their attack force ahead of the new season.
