Newcastle United are considering a shock late bid for out of contract Reading center back Alex Pearce, who is on the verge of signing for Liverpool after having reportedly accepted their offer of a 20,000 pounds a week contract.
Pearce, who had previously worked with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, had played a limited role at the Madejski Stadium last season after refusing to put pen to paper on a new contract, and was practically left out in the cold.
The 24 year old Irish international is a talented player though, and it is no surprise that he has multiple clubs lining up to sign him. At 6 feet 2 inches tall, Pearce is a genuine threat in both boxes, a fact he proved by scoring on his international debut.
Newcastle are reportedly looking at the player as a possible replacement for captain Fabricio Coloccini, who continues to be linked with a return to Argentina this summer.
It remains to be seen though what role both clubs intend to offer Pearce, and the side which is likely to give him more first team opportunities could yet bag his signature.
