Queens Park Rangers are set to make a shock bid for Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud this summer. According to reports in the Daily Mail, Mark Hughes is looking to snap up the striker as he wishes to avoid another relegation struggle and the Welshman is willing to cough up a sizable amount of his transfer budget to bring the Frenchman to Loftus Road.
A £12.8m release clause in Giroud’s contract is going to make Hughes’ job a little easier, but one can’t help but wonder if the striker himself would be open to a move to a club in transition looking to establish itself in the Premier League, rather than a top team in Europe. Having just won the Ligue 1 title, surely Giroud would not be interested in a club battling to avoid finishing in the bottom three.
QPR will face a strong challenge from Arsenal for the player and if rumours are indeed true about an interest from both clubs, the Emirates will no doubt be a more likely destination for the talented 25 year old. Arsene Wenger has been looking to enhance his strike force this summer, and with as many as 4 strikers on the chopping block at the Emirates, a move to London does look to be on the cards for Giroud.
