Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to take the captain’s armband away from John Terry in his final year at the club, and wants to appoint Brazilian sensation David Luiz as the club’s new skipper.
Terry is becoming an increasingly fringe player at the club over the last few months, and the Russian billionaire wants to marginalize the veteran’s role inside the dressing room, reportedly holding him responsible for the Andre Villas-Boas situation last season.
Terry himself has stated time and again that he believes Luiz will go on to become a Chelsea legend and has praised the defenders leadership qualities on and off the pitch.
With Terry not playing regularly anymore, the club needs a strong personality to take charge of proceedings out in the middle and the exceedingly likable Luiz appears to be the right man for the job.
However his premature appointment should it happen this summer is likely to surprise one and all. Currently goalkeeper Petr Cech wears the captain’s armband when Terry and Frank Lampard are both missing from the playing eleven. It remains to be seen how the veteran goalie reacts to Abramovich’s snub.
