Should Chelsea give Frank Lampard a new contract?

Chelsea juggernaut rolls on under Rafael Benitez. After impressive victories against Aston Villa and Norwich City, Chelsea drilled out a positive result after going down early at the Goodison Park against ‘nemesis’ Everton.

Yeah, indeed Goodison Park is a nemesis for the Blues. Prior to the match, Chelsea haven’t won there in four consecutive seasons. It all looked like heading in the same direction until old guard Frank Lampard stepped up and secured vital three points for the Blues.

Lampard, affectionately known as “Super Frank” is a legend at the club and every fan of the club want to see him stay till the end of his career. He is 34, and his contract will be over in few months’ time.

Chelsea have yet to offer him a new contract and the player has admitted that no such talks have taken place in the last couple of weeks.

Speaking to BBC, after the match where his brace kept Chelsea in the title race, Lampard said “We haven’t been talking about a new contract in the last couple of weeks. At the moment nothing has been said and my contract is up in the summer.”

Lampard is just one short of second-placed Kerry Dixon’s 193 strikes in the club’s all-time goal-scoring standings and has shown in recent matches that he hasn’t lost the sharpness as yet. He is still a proven match winner. Chelsea owner should give him one year contract extension now. Sir Alex Ferguson still has kept the likes of Giggs and Scholes, despite knowing they are getting too old simply because he knows the value of leaders in the team and dressing room. Chelsea need a leader both on and off the pitch and therefore Lampard should stay at the club beyond his contract.
