Spanish midfield maestro still coveted by both Chelsea and Liverpool
Xabi Alonso is perhaps one of the most scarcely lauded players at Real Madrid. In a team laden with stars, the Spaniard performs the task of manning the midfield, complementing their fast attacking style with his inimitable passing.
It therefore doesn’t come as a surprise that new manager Carlo Ancelotti wants to keep the player at the club. According to reports in AS, the Spanish giants have offered the player a one year contract extension, although Alonso himself is yet to agree to any deal.
Rumour mills have been going abuzz with the news of Chelsea’s interest in the player and former employers Liverpool too may be keen to reunite the player with Steven Gerrard, given the success the pair have had previously.
Alonso faces massive competition at Madrid and he may just see his future elsewhere, especially if the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool come in with concrete bids.
Out of both the English giants mentioned above, Liverpool do have the edge in the race given Alonso’s past at the club, although Jose Mourinho, who managed Alonso at the Bernabeu, could have a big say in the matter. Moreover, just like they refused a deal for Clint Dempsey, Liverpool’s American owners may not see value in this deal and that could make Chelsea the favourites to sign him.
