Thurs 19th July – Arsenal transfer news, midfielder targeted and another day of contract gossip

The latest update from the Robin van Persie contract drama comes courtesy of the Express who report that Arsenal are prepared to lose the player for free next year by rejecting any bids this summer. Manchester City and Juventus have been awaiting further developments in the Dutchman’s talks with Arsenal before making their big-money moves. But the Gunners aren’t ready to be held hostage by the wantaway striker, preferring to keep him at the Emirates until the end of his contract.

However, this morning’s Daily Mirror tells a different story with Sir Alex Ferguson having reportedly told close confidants that Manchester United are in pole position to sign the Dutch striker and that £20 million would be enough to wrap up the deal. ·

Some more Arsenal news, and the Metro reports that Arsene Wenger is finally set to end his contract impasse with Theo Walcott and begin contract negotiations with the 23-year old winger. Walcott has reportedly asked to be made Arsenal’s highest paid player with a salary of £100,000 a week, a figure Wenger is unlikely to concede, but given that the youngster is already being paid £65,000, there isn’t too much room for wiggling.

Blackburn Rovers have admitted defeat in their attempt to hang on to wantaway defensive midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, opening the door for Arsenal and Chelsea to battle for the £10 million rated player reports the Daily Star. The French international would probably feel right at home at Arsenal, but there is a greater likelihood that Chelsea would meet Blackburn’s valuation, leaving the battle for his signature evenly poised.
