Thursday 21st Feb – Arsenal daily news round up

Arsenal are in a free-fall but the club’s board still has faith in manager Arsene Wenger. And the Daily Mail reports that the Gunners boss will be handed substantial amount of cash to splash in the summer transfer window to revamp the squad. The targets reportedly in Wenger’s sights are Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, Dortmund’s Mario Gotze, Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama and Toulouse’s Etienne Capoue.

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has mocked Arsenal after his side’s win over the Gunners in the Champions League. The France international has been quoted by the Sun saying, “We didn’t think it would be so easy. We know Arsenal are having some problems in the league, maybe they are lacking in confidence.” The remarks will add more misery on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who has been under-fire for his side’s poor campaign.

Arsenal were handed a beating by Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League and would have felt their week couldn’t get any worse. But Stephan El-Shaarawy has picked the wrong moment to sign a new deal at AC Milan. The Metro understands that the Italian has agreed a new 5-year extension at the San Siro ending Arsenal’s hopes of signing the talented youngster.

The Gunners have felt the need to strengthen their midfield since the departure of Alex Song and their search for a midfield general has taken them to France. According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal sent scouts to watch Lyon defensive midfielder Maxine Gonalons in action over the weekend. The club’s quest to find cover in defence has taken them to Italy as the Gunners monitor Torino centre-back and Manchester United-target Angelo Ogbonna.
