The idea of the Tottenham midfield being a barren wasteland certainly seems to appeal to the international media. After Spanish dailies have made it their own personal battleground to make Croatian midfielder Luka Modric move to Real Madrid, it is now the turn of the German and Italian media to turn its tentacles on one Rafael van der Vaart.
After a summer of being linked with a return to Germany with either former club Hamburg or possibly even rivals Schalke, it appears that the big guns of Serie A are now focusing their energies on bringing the Dutch playmaker over to Italy with clubs from Milan, Naples and Rome all rumoured to be interested interested in signing the 29-year old.
Van der Vaart may have pledged his allegiance to continuing on at White Hart Lane in the foreseeable future, but that won’t keep the rumour mongers away. With managerial favourite Andre Villas-Boas probably keen on bringing in some fresh blood, one could well see the Dutchman look at other pastures where his experience is likely to be held in much higher esteem.
