Manchester United will have company in the race to sign James Rodriguez at the end of the season. According to the Express, Tottenham are ready to rival United for the Porto winger who could cost the Premier League duo close to £25 million.
Rodriguez started his career at Colombian club Envigado as a youth player in 1995 at the age of 4 before making his professional debut for Argentine club Banfield in 2008. Porto snapped up the player in 2010 and the youngster has since gone on to develop into one of Europe’s most promising prospects.
The 21-year old winger has already scored 8 goals in the Portuguese league this season and has also been capped for the Colombian national team.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked with Rodriguez over the past couple of seasons and has been tipped to make a formal approach in the summer. The Manchester United manager is reportedly planning to use under-fire winger Nani to land Rodriguez in a direct swap deal but the Portuguese international has rejuvenated his United career in recent weeks and looks set for an extended stay.
Tottenham hotshot Gareth Bale has been in scintillating form this season and has already been linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid at the end of the season. Manager Andre Villas-Boas is keen to find cover should Bale leave the club and the former Porto manager has identified Rodriguez as a suitable replacement for the Welshman.
