Tues 31st July – Arsenal and Newcastle prominent in today's transfer gossip columns

Arsenal and Robin van Persie have just had a wonderful dream where both their demands were met by a magical angel called the Old Lady. Not only has the angel promised the £20m demanded by Arsenal, it has also pledged £190,000-a-week to the Dutchman after taxes, taking the total sum of the entire deal to a cool £70m. The Mirror feel that it is in fact reality and not a dream, with the angel being played with great aplomb by Juventus.

Newcastle have reportedly tabled a £4 million offer for FC Twente center-back Douglas according to the Sun. The Magpies have been chasing the Brazilian born defender all summer, and believe that they are finally on the verge of getting their man.

Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has taken on an additional job this summer as the unoffocial spokesperson for French national teammate Mathieu Debuchy. Cabaye shared in an interview with The Journal, “Mathieu has made a very difficult to decision to leave Lille, but he has made the decision. Now I hope Newcastle push for Mathieu and I want them to do the deal.·I spoke with him two days ago and he told me he wants to come. I hope Derek and Mike Ashley will do the business now.” Come on Mike, do the business. Now!

Clint Dempsey has skipped Fulham’s pre-season tour of Switzerland according to reports in the Sun. While the official line from the club is that the player needs to regain full fitness, many believe that a move away from the Cottage lies in the future of the American international.

A few days after Bayern Munich declared they had no interest in signing Dutch midfield battler Nigel de Jong, the player has come out in the press sharing that he is happy with the club and is targeting more silverware this season. De Jong has entered the final year of his Man City contract, and with the club unprepared to offer him the astronomical wages he was demanding, looked certain to move away from Eastlands, and probably even the Premier League. However, in an interview with the Manchester Evening News, De Jong declared,·”I’m playing football and I’m happy here. I’m happy when I’m on the pitch and when I’m playing – football’s the most beautiful game in the world, and you have to enjoy every moment…·We set ourselves the goal of taking it step by step. We won the FA Cup last year, then the Premier League last season, so the next thing is the Champions League.”

It appears there is going to be a happy homecoming for James Collins with the Welsh center-back set to return to West Ham United according to reports in the Mirror. With Dutch international Ron Vlaar flying in from Feyenoord, Collins has been deemed surplus to requirements, and the club are looking to get his £40,000 a week wages off their books.

Tim Cahill is reportedly already missing Merseyside, and just days after signing for New York Red Bulls has spoken about returning to Everton on loan in January, ala Landon Donovan according to reports in the Sun.

Reading are hoping that their return to the Premier League could convince former striker Shane Long to re-join the club this summer, but they are going to meet some heavy resistance from new West Brom boss Steve Clarke, who has ruled out the sale according to the Sun.
