Spanish giants Barcelona are eyeing a multi-million pound deal for Tottenham’s versatile right back Vedran Corluka in order to strengthen their depleted defence. According to the El Mundo Deportivo, the club’s representatives have been present at the European Championships to keep a close eye on the Croatian, watching him play in both games against Ireland and Italy.
The defender went on loan to Bayer Leverkusen this January and featured for the German club against Barcelona in their Champions League tie. The Croat impressed in his spell with the club and is now being scouted by a Barcelona team who will be trying hard to re-establish themselves as the best club in Spain, let alone Europe.
Barcelona are reeling from last season’s disappointment after the club only managed to win the Copa del Rey, failing to defend either their UEFA Champions League or La Liga crowns. After the departure of charismatic coach Pep Guardiola, there are some who believe that it’s the beginning of the end for a squad that has mesmerised the world with the ball in their feet. Corluka’s arrival may not spur immediate confidence in the fans, but may prove to be an intelligent purchase that will pay dividends in the long term.

Corluka wasn’t up to it in the Premiership and his departure from Spurs was long overdue. I would be amazed if Barca are seriously looking at a player of his calibre
Cerny……if Corluka wasn’t up to it then why did Spurs finish 4th, 5th and get to the Champions League quarter final with him in the team 2009/10 & 2010/11???
He’s also the full back for Croatia, ranked 8 in the world. He’s only fallen behind at Spurs because of the emergence of Walker who is and will be a sensational player. Most teams in the Prem League would love to have Corluka at their club. Wake up.
It is very sad if Barca are chasing the likes of corluka. The guy is such an average player i would not recommend him to go to zaragoza
I’m wide awake thanks Simon. Chelsea just won CL with the likes of Kalou in their team, doesn’t make him a great player. The question is, if Corluka is anywhere near as good as you appear to suggest, why would Spurs farm him out when it’s vital to have quality cover for all positions in a squad?
Slightly odd that you should think most teams in the Prem would love to have Corluka as I don’t remember many coming forward for his services when he was made available.
He’s too pedestrian, gives away too much ball and his decision making is poor. His form dropped massively and he became a liability. Kranjcar wasn’t playing much but was kept at the club until very recently as he is a decent player in whom they had confidence to step in when required.
As for Croatia’s 8th in the world ranking, they’re probably not even 8th best in Europe having been topped by a medoicre Greece side in qualifying. If you believe otherwise, it’s you who should wake up
no wonder they’re queuing up, Simon
